Is the RX 570 good in 2020?

The RX 570 is a lower mid-range graphics card that came out in 2017. Back then it was good enough to play all demanding titles in 1080p and high presets. Nowadays the GPU still holds its ground. Let's take a look at how convenient it is to buy a RX 570 in 2020 by using some benchmarks and its price to performance ratio. Also we are going to compare it to the other options.

Is the RX570 still good in 2020?

The RX570 performs well in modern titles as of 2020, allowing for good frame rates at 1080p and high presets. It can handle every eSport game smoothly while being affordable and having a good price to performance ratio. Nevertheless there are newer options in the market that offer better future proofing than a 3 years old GPU.

The RX 570 came out 3 years ago already as a mid-range graphics card for Desktop PCs. It is based on the Polaris 20 chip and its direct predecessor is the RX 470. It uses the same chip as the RX 580 but with less shaders.

Its direct competitor is the NVIDIA GTX 1060, which has the same TDP, is slightly more expensive and performs a bit better.

The RX 570 was often used in enthusiast mining rigs, which puts graphics cards in heavy pressure for extended periods of time. That is something to take into consideration when buying used.

The graphics card works well in modern titles, with the exceptions of final fantasy XV and Metro Exodus, which run close to 30 fps (still playable), adjusting the graphics to medium is necessary if you want to achieve 50+ fps.

If what you're intending to do with this GPU is to play Grand Theft Auto 5, you're in luck. Whether to play online or history mode, the RX 570 performs very well in GTA 5.

On the other hand if you're interested in eSport titles, here are the benchmarks you need to see:

Pros and cons of buying a RX 570 in 2020

Pros:

  • Good for almost all modern titles in 1080p normal/high presets.
  • Still a very good price to performance ratio. Significantly better than the closed priced GTX 1050 and GTX 1650.
  • Runs cool and silent if properly cooled.
  • The RX 570 meets VR minimum requirements, runs fine.
  • One of the best if not the best budget option at the moment.

Cons:

  • Consumes more power than its price competitors (GTX 1050 and GTX1650), thus requiring a better power supply and a bigger case to fit and have good airflow.
  • Bad future proofing, it is a 3 years old graphics card already.

Best CPUs to pair with a RX 570

Currently the RX 570 is considered a budget GPU that is probably being builded into a budget PC, taking that into consideration the best CPU options to pair with a RX 570 are the cheaper options in intel's and AMD's lineup.

Nevertheless the CPU must be strong enough in order to not generate any bottleneck, while still being budget sensitive.

Ryzen 3 3100: An excellent 2020 CPU. The AMD budget option has 4 cores/8 threads and a TDP of 65W. While being very cheap (just $99) it offers a performance worthy of a high end CPU of a few years ago. The Ryzen 3 3100 won't bottleneck your RX570, if anything, it's the other way around.

Ryzen 3 3100

i3-10100: If you're more comfortable with intel when it comes to CPUs, then the i3-10100 won't disappoint as it offers the same performance as its AMD counterpart, although it retails for $122, $23 more than the Ryzen 3 3100, which is pretty significant in a budget build.

Besides CPU pairing, it is recommended to have a minimum of 8GB RAM and a SSD in your build.

Options to the RX 570

The options near the price of a RX 570 are NVIDIA's GTX 1050, GTX 1650 and GTX 1060. In AMDs side you have the RX570 and RX580 in a slightly higher price.

Graphics card Price Performance compared to the RX 570
RX 570 $120 +0%
GTX 1050 $129 -63%
GTX 1650 $150 -20%
GTX 1060 $252 +16%
RX 580 $159 +17%
RX 590 $218 +29%

As you can see the RX570 destroys the competition as of 2020. Although there are some catches:

  • The RX 570 consumes more power than the GTX 1050 and GTX 1650, thus requiring a better PSU and bigger case.
  • The RX 570 is older than the GTX 1650, therefore is less future proof.
  • The RX 570 is a cut version of the RX 580.

Final thoughts

The AMD RX570 , still today, coupled with a good quality processor like a Ryzen 3 3100 or a good Intel processor is able to provide absolutely unexpected performance for a GPU released in 2017, providing an incredible fluidity of play in all modern games with a 1080p resolution with graphic settings set to high level, guaranteeing an excellent gaming experience. Even today this card, together with the RX580 and RX590 models, guarantees users great satisfaction and a wide margin of overclocking and an excellent assistance from AMD that still releases many driver updates for these GPUs. Nevertheless the RX 570 is not perfect, it draws a significant amount of power and can heat up if not properly cooled, it also is not future proof and while it holds its own in VR games, we don't expect it to do it in future years. However the RX570 is still one of the most interesting AMD cards also in 2020 , given its favorable quality, performance and affordability.
